China – BYD Co Ltd of Shenzhen is to introduce what it calls new Blade Battery technology, which it claims will revolutionise EV development. The new battery is currently being offered in its Tang model SUV which is said to have given it a range of around 505km. No details have been released about the battery’s chemical composition, but BYD claims it substantially outperforms current lithium and lithium-ion products.

BYD says the Blade batteries are being produced in a new CYN10bn (EUR1.54bn) facility which is maintained at a constant 25 degrees Centigrade temperature and low level of humidity. According to BYD, safety testing of the technology showed nail-penetration testing caused no smoke or flame and overcharging by 260% did not result in fire or explosion.
