GermanyKögel Trailer GmbH of Burtenbach is introducing revised trailer designs to meet new European Union legislation on rear underrun guards, being introduced from September 1, 2021. Kögel states that rear underrun guards must comply with new statutory provisions in accordance with the amendment of EU Directive UN/ECE R58.

These new provisions require underrun guards on new trailers must, in future, meet new geometric properties and be able to withstand test forces almost double the existing requirement. The new designs must also include extended cantilever arms and a reduction in the maximum distance from the ground from 550mm to 450mm. The revised product characteristics are aimed at delivering a significant increase in safety, but also result in more weight. Kögel says its engineers have counteracted the additional weight with state-of-the art and sustainable vehicle innovations across its range of trailers.
