Germany – Voith Turbo GmbH of Heindenheim, Germany has introduced a new medium-duty version of its Voith Electrical Drive System (VEDS). Suited to various public transport applications for those OEMs and new start-ups shifting or moving into electric mobility, the new MD (medium-duty) VEDS version, provides up to 260kW output with maximum torque of 2,850Nm. Voith said it is designed for single buses and trucks weighing up to 19 metric tons and that it is optimised for urban use.

Compared with the existing HD (heavy duty) version, the MD e-motor is 50kg lighter, which potentially enables greater range. The more powerful 340kW IPMS e-motor (HD) with a maximum torque of 3,100Nm is suited to double-deck and articulated buses or trucks over 26 metric tons and is also suitable for inter-urban driving profiles. Wrightbus was the first bus manufacturer to choose to integrate the latest engine option into the second generation of its battery electric (BEV) and fuel cell electric (FCEV) buses for Europe.
