Scania develops biogas-fuelled coach for Flixbus

Sweden / Finland – Collaboration between Scania’s bus and coach division, gas provider, Gasum1 and transport operator, Flixbus2, will see the introduction of the first biogas-fuelled long distance LNG-powered coach route between Stockholm and Oslo. Biogas is currently used mostly in compressed form and mainly by city buses, cars and light transport vehicles, as it has been viewed as uncompetitive for heavy long-distance vehicles.

In recent years, technology has been developed to cool the biogas to around minus 160 degrees Celsius, where it becomes liquid and more energy-dense. This opens the possibility of using the gas for heavy transport, both by land and by sea. Availability of biogas will improve quickly throughout Europe, as the EU is to make fuelling points available along main European road networks through the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) policy initiative.
