UK government pushes hydrogen-fuelled alternatives to diesel in new strategy document

UK – The UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy published a document outlining the UK Hydrogen Strategy, which sets a target for the economy of 5GW low carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030 and which outlines policies the government will pursue to encourage the adoption of hydrogen in the transportation sector.

The transportation sector was responsible for 27% of total greenhouse-gas emissions in the UK in 2019. Hydrogen, the document states, is “likely to be fundamental to achieving net zero [emissions] in transport, potentially complementing electrification” across various modes of transportation, including buses and heavy goods vehicles. It is an expedient alternative because it can be used directly in combustion engines and fuel cells, and as feedstock to produce other alternative fuels such as ammonia.
