USA Proterra Inc of Burlingame, California, recently struck a major purchase agreement with Capital Metro, a public transportation provider in Austin, Texas, for 26 electric buses, with the option to purchase an additional 126, plus charging equipment, over the next five years, making it, according to Proterra, one of the largest electric transit bus procurements to date in North America. The initial delivery is scheduled for next year.

Capital Metro have ordered the 40-foot version of the ZX5 Electric Bus, with batteries which provide 675 kWh of storage capacity, and which deliver a range of up to 329 miles on a single charge. The batteries, which were developed in-house, provide the best performance of any 40-foot electric bus available on the market, according to Proterra. The company also offers a turnkey solution to fleet electrification, providing charging infrastructure and finance along with electric vehicles.
