USARaven SR Inc, a hydrogen and synthetic fuels production company based in Pinedale, Wyoming, is partnering with Republic Services Inc, a waste disposal company based in Phoenix, Arizona, to develop a hydrogen production hub at Republic Services’ West Contra Costa Sanitary Landfill site in northern California. The production hub, which will employ Raven SR’s patented waste-to-hydrogen technology, is slated to begin operation in September 2022.

Raven SR has developed a Steam/CO2 Reformation process to produce hydrogen from waste which requires no combustion and no catalysts to work effectively. Through “pyrolysis” or thermal decomposition in an inert atmosphere, any mix, whether wet or dry, of carbon-based waste can be processed and ground down all together in the first stage of the process. 20% of the product, which is solid carbon waste, can be employed as feedstock; the rest is put through a second stage which produces “syngas”, a fuel gas mixture of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and some carbon dioxide, which is the building block for various synthetic fuels and for hydrogen (as fuel).
