SwedenScania AB, a subsidiary of the Traton Group based in Södertälje, Sweden, has announced it is working with Svenska Cellulosa AB (“SCA”), a pulp and paper manufacturer based in Sundsvall, Sweden, to develop the very first electric truck adapted to the transportation of timber. Testing of a prototype is set to begin in 2022.

The truck is to transport timber in the region of Västerbotten in northern Sweden, running between SCA’s terminal in Gimonäs and its papermill in Obbola. It should be capable of hauling a total weight of up to 64 tonnes on public roads and up to 80 tonnes on private roads. SCA transports approximately 8.5 million cubic metres of wood annually, employing 26 trucks in collaboration with 87 haulage contractors, and thus it requires electric trucks capable of sustaining this performance.
