Lightning eMotors signs battery supply agreement with CATL

USA / China – Commercial vehicle electrification specialist, Lightning eMotors, headquartered in Loveland, Colorado, has announced the signing of a supply agreement with the North American distributor for Ningde, China-based Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL). Under the agreement, Lightning will purchase 175MWh of CATL battery products over a two-year period from Coulomb Solutions Inc, located in Livermore, California. The firm states it expects to start vehicle production with CATL battery packs in March 2022.

CATL’s batteries are to be available to Lightning in two options - a 30 kWh or 35 kWh battery pack. In addition, the two firms will work together to design and install contactor safety switch systems for CATL-C and CATL-G battery packs that will be delivered exclusively to Lightning. These switches will allow first responders to easily disable the vehicles entire powertrain in the event of an accident.
