By Bradley Osborne - 20th December 2021
UK – Transport for the North, a sub-national transport body based in Manchester, UK which represents the North of England, has released a report outlining its Transport Decarbonisation Strategy. The advisory document outlines how near-zero carbon emissions in surface transport might be achieved in the region by 2045. It is the first such regional strategy of its kind to be published in England.
The report was approved on 24 November by the Board, which comprises political and business leaders from the North of England. It states that 23% of the UK’s road emissions are contributed by the North, representing 6% of total UK emissions. Heavy goods vehicles and vans were responsible for 28% and 11%, respectively, of road emissions in the region, while bus and rail account for just 5%.
