USA / UK – BAE Systems plc, headquartered in London and Farnborough, UK, has signed an agreement with Meritor Inc of Troy, Michigan, to jointly develop an integrated electric drivetrain for the commercial and defence sectors. The initial focus of the partnership will take place in North America and Europe, with the potential for later expansion into other global markets.

Under the agreement, Meritor will produce the e-axle and its combined electric motor, with BAE systems contributing the power electronics and systems integration. BAE can also supply battery or fuel cell kits depending on the application, thanks to an existing agreement with fuel cell manufacturer Plug Power Inc, based in Latham, New York. In addition, BAE systems currently produces its own energy storage solutions, offering a 32kWh battery or a 1kWh supercapacitor that are currently in service across the firm’s range of hybrid bus powertrains.
