USARomeo Power Inc, a battery manufacturer based in Vernon, California, and Wrightspeed, an electric powertrain specialist based in Alameda, California, have announced a partnership to develop a retrofit electrification kit for commercial vehicles, including buses and some medium- and heavy-duty trucks.

The two companies will collaboratively develop ‘Powertrain in a Crate’ electrification kits combining Wrightspeed powertrains and Romeo Power batteries. Wrightspeed will contribute its range of chassis-specific “Route” powertrains, including traction drive axles with electric motors, which will be retrofitted in diesel vehicles along with battery systems and dashboard telematics. The companies will target an estimated addressable market of over one million trucks and buses, which can be converted to run on electric power at a fraction of the cost of a brand-new battery-electric vehicle.
