Thermo King launches new diesel electric transport refrigeration unit

USA – Thermo King Corporation, a subsidiary of Trane Technologies based in Bloomington, Minnesota, has launched a new S-Series transport refrigeration unit which it claims is the first to use a diesel electric architecture with integrated shore power. The TRU, combining an S-Series engine with a generator and belt drive, is optimised for using shore power over diesel.1
The ’Precedent S-750i’ is based on Thermo King’s S-Series refrigeration units but is designed to run more efficiently on shore power than diesel. The benefits claimed from this design choice include four times greater efficiency, lower emissions, quieter operation (by at least 3 decibels), lower maintenance, and a longer service life. The S-750i uses Thermo King’s new refrigerant standard, R452A, with a 45% reduction in global warming potential over the refrigerant (R404A) used previously. The S-750i, Thermo King claims, also emits 96% less particulate matter and 52% less NOx than other <25hp solutions. Thermo King is also claiming a 3lbs CO2 emissions saving per running hour while the TRU is running on shore power compared to conventional diesel TRUs. The S-750i is reportedly set to meet current and proposed emission regulations for TRUs issued by the California Air Resources Board without the need for a diesel particulate filter.
