Scania to appeal against ‘antitrust’ judgement by General Court of the EU

SwedenScania AB, a commercial vehicle manufacturer and subsidiary of the Traton Group based in Södertälje, Sweden, has announced that it is appealing against the judgement handed down by the General Court of the EU, that Scania did in fact violate ‘antitrust’ rules between 1997-2011, the period during which major European truck manufacturers (including DAF, Daimler Truck, Volvo, MAN, and Iveco) reportedly colluded in fixing prices.

The judgement was made on February 2, 2022, in response to an appeal made by Scania against the original European Commission ruling (27 September 2017) which held the Swedish manufacturer liable to pay a EUR880m fine. Scania continues to deny all involvement in the truck cartel, which involved the exchange of price lists and information on the factory price of trucks, informing each other of planned factory price increases, and even agreeing on price increases. The European Commission also accused the companies of collectively passing on the cost of developing low-emissions technologies to comply with EU regulations to their customers.
