Allison Transmission and Hyzon Motors powering UK’s first HFC refuse truck

The HFC refuse truck featuring Allison and Hyzon drive components

UK – Indianapolis, Indiana-based Allison Transmission Inc, and Hyzon Motors Inc of Rochester, New York, have been selected to provide the propulsion system for the UK’s first hydrogen fuel cell-powered refuse truck. Aberdeen City council has chosen to pair a 250kW Hyzon electric motor with Allison’s 3000 Series transmission in conjunction with a 45kW hydrogen fuel cell.

The refuse vehicle is expected to have a range of 250km (155 miles), allowing the truck to complete its duty cycle without having to return to the depot and refuel. The truck is based on the Mercedes-Benz Econic Hydrogen chassis with a 15kg tank capacity at 350 bar, and a 140kWh battery capacity at 700 volts.
