Transpotec 2022: A report on small-scale trailer manufacturing in Italy

|

By Bradley Osborne - 31st May 2022

Italy – Sales figures by semi-trailer brand for 2021, published by the Associazione Nazionale Filiera Industria Automobilistica (ANFIA), show the predominance of foreign companies in the Italian trailer market. Schmitz Cargobull, which currently stands as the market leader with a 13% share, hails from Horstmar in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany; Krone, whose improved sales (from 1,030 units in 2020 to 1,531 in 2021) launched it into third place, is another German company.

The strength of homegrown trailer manufacturing lies, in part, in three major brands: Menci, Tecnokar Trailer, and Viberti Rimorchi. However, only the first two have a claim to independence, as Viberti is in fact a subsidiary of the Polish Wielton Group. Menci remains in second place in the Italian market by the slightest margin – a 11.3% share compared to Krone’s 11.2% (unit sales of 1,544 versus 1,531). It was also glaringly absent from ‘Transpotec Logitec’, Italy’s major transport and logistics exhibition held, for the first time, at Fiera Milano near the city of Milan (12-15 May). (On Tecnokar, see a dedicated report published separately.)
