Blue Bird Corp moves into truck segment with unveiling of Class 5-6 chassis at ACT Expo

Blue Bird's Class 5-6 EV chassis on display at ACT Expo

USA – Macon, Georgia-based school bus builder Blue Bird Corp has entered the truck segment with the announcement of its Class 5-6 EV stripped chassis at ACT Expo in Long Beach, California. With the powertrain provided by Colorado-based Lightning eMotors Inc, the chassis is suitable for last-mile delivery step vans, motorhomes, and other specialty vehicles. The chassis will begin production in late 2023 at Blue Bird’s manufacturing plant in Fort Valley, Georgia.

Blue Bird states that the chassis’ modular design allows for multiple battery configurations ranging from 70kWh up to 225kWh. At the high end, this supports a maximum vehicle range of 175 miles (280km) on a single charge. The chassis is also being offered in three wheelbase options of 178”, 190”, and 208”, supporting a maximum GVWR of 26,000 lbs (11.8 tonnes).
