Voith Composites developing carbon-fibre hydrogen storage tanks
By Bradley Osborne - 17th June 2022
Germany – Voith Composites, a division of mechanical engineering firm Voith GmbH & Co KGaA of Heidenheim an der Brenz, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, has announced that it is developing a hydrogen storage tank for vehicle fuelling purposes made from carbon-fibre-reinforced-polymers (CFRP), enabling greater storage capacity without compromising on payload or performance.
CFRPs are a highly durable material with a high strength-to-weight ratio, meaning that 700 bar pressure for hydrogen storage is possible without overburdening the vehicle with extra weight. This means that hydrogen-fuelled vehicles installed with Voith’s ‘Carbon4Tank’ storage system should be able to carry more fuel and therefore extend their range.
