Netherlands / Australia / USA – Automotive corporation Stellantis NV of Amsterdam, Netherlands has made a EUR50m equity investment into Vulcan Energy Resources Ltd, an energy metals exploration company based in Perth, Western Australia which is developing a zero-emission process for extracting and producing battery-grade lithium.

Vulcan Energy is currently operating a geothermal lithium brine project in the Upper Rhine Valley region of Germany. Lithium is a naturally-occurring element which is essential to the chemistry of lithium-ion batteries, a major power source for battery-electric and hybrid vehicles. According to Vulcan Energy, hard rock mining and brine evaporation methods of lithium extraction are carbon intensive and detrimental to the environment; whereas its zero-carbon method, using geothermal energy, requires very little water and a small amount of land to be carried out.
