France / USA – Tyre manufacturer Michelin Group of Clermont-Ferrand, France has acquired Roadbotics Inc of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, a tech firm which specialises in visual analysis of road infrastructure using artificial intelligence.

Founded in 2016, Roadbotics primarily advises local authorities on road maintenance by identifying priority areas of concern. Its AI technology employs machine-learning to analyse images of roads taken from cameras (mainly from smartphones, Roadbotics claims). By acquiring Roadbotics, Michelin adds to its portfolio of data-driven services providing analytics related to tyre and vehicle usage and driving behaviour. Called ‘Michelin DDi’ (Driving Data to Intelligence), this suite of services will appeal to road managers looking to improve safety on the networks they are responsible for.
