Outrider releases autonomy kit for electric terminal tractors

Electric terminal tractor fitted with Outrider's autonomous driving technology

USAOutrider, a tech start-up based in Golden, Colorado, has released a kit for installation into autonomy-ready Class 8 battery-electric terminal tractors, turning them into fully autonomous vehicles.

The kit combines components sourced from multiple companies. These include: the ‘DRIVE’ autonomous vehicle platform for perception system processing by multinational tech firm Nvidia Corporation; lidar sensors by Ouster Inc; and an industrial robotic arm for connecting and disconnecting trailer lines by Japanese firm Yaskawa Electric Corporation. Together with Outrider’s proprietary software, these components will convert a terminal tractor installed with drive by wire (i.e., electrical or electromechanical systems to replace mechanical linkages) into a completely autonomous vehicle.
