UK / Netherlands – Multinational oil and gas company Shell plc, headquartered in London, UK, has announced that its subsidiaries Shell Nederland BV and Shell Overseas Investments BV will build a renewable hydrogen plant in the Netherlands which will become one of the largest in Europe.

The 200 MW electrolyser, called ‘Holland Hydrogen I’, will be constructed on the Tweede Maasvlakte in the port of Rotterdam. When it begins operation in 2025, the plant will produce up to 60,000 kg of renewable hydrogen per day, using energy drawn from an offshore wind farm (Hollandse Kust Noord) which is part-owned by Shell.

While hydrogen produced at the plant will primarily supply Shell’s operations at its refinery nearby, the company has stated that it expects demand to come from the heavy-duty trucking sector as well.
