Germany – Siemens AG of Munich, Bavaria has agreed a strategic partnership with Skeleton Technologies GmbH of Großröhrsdorf, Saxony for the development and implementation of a fully-automated and digitised production line for supercapacitors at a projected facility in Markranstädt (also in Saxony).
The new factory for the production of supercapacitor cells is scheduled to open in two phases: first in 2024, producing up to 12 million cells a year; and then in 2025, creating up to 240 jobs. The facility will reportedly have an output forty times greater than that of Skeleton’s current production site in Großröhrsdorf. According to Skeleton, this will make it the largest supercapacitor factory in the world. It represents a EUR220m investment by Skeleton, with EUR100m being spent on manufacturing equipment and EUR120m being invested in scaling up and in research and development. Siemens will support Skeleton in developing a fully-automated production line and a product design and manufacturing process which is fully digitised. These innovations, Skeleton claims, will help to reduce production costs by around 90% within the five-year partnership.
