Siemens and Mahle to develop wireless charging infrastructure

Germany – The e-mobility division of Siemens AG of Munich, Bavaria has signed a letter of intent with Mahle GmbH, an automotive components manufacturer based in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, to collaborate in the development of inductive or wireless charging for electric vehicles.
The two companies believe that inductive charging – a type of power transfer which uses electromagnetic induction – has multiple advantages over conventional plug-in chargers. Recharging an electric vehicle would simply involve parking it near a charging station – for instance, over a charging panel installed in the ground – without having to deal with any cables. This would make it possible for a driverless vehicle to recharge itself without any human input.
