Volvo Trucks presents e-axle at the IAA
By Bradley Osborne - 29th September 2022
Germany / Sweden – Volvo Trucks Corporation of Gothenburg, Sweden unveiled an electric rear axle at IAA Transportation in Hanover on 19 September, designed to free up space for more batteries and therefore extend the range of Volvo’s electric trucks.
Volvo Trucks sells six electric truck models: FE, FL, FH, FM, and FMX, as well as the VNR in North America. In these vehicles, two to three electric motors mounted between the chassis rails and connected to a transmission provide traction, powered by battery packs installed on either side of the chassis. Removing the traction motor from the centre of the chassis frame frees up space for other uses – for instance, another battery pack providing more range. Instead, the motors and the transmission are integrated with the rear or drive axle, making for a more compact powertrain.
