Mahle to develop humidifiers for cellcentric fuel cell systems

A flat membrane humidifier for fuel cell commercial vehicles by Mahle

GermanyMahle GmbH, an automotive parts manufacturer based in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, has signed a letter of intent for the joint development and production of humidifiers with Volvo-Daimler joint venture cellcentric GmbH & Co KG of Kirchheim unter Teck, Baden-Württemberg for prolonging the service life of fuel cells.

cellcentric will support Mahle in producing flat membrane humidifiers at scale, which will be integrated in cellcentric’s fuel cell systems for commercial vehicles. Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells are sensitive to changes in water balance: if there is too little water, the chance of a gas breakthrough increases; if there is too much, gases are allowed to freely enter the catalytic converter. The humidity must therefore be closely controlled to ensure the durability of the fuel cell system.
