VDL launches second-life battery project

VDL e-buses operated by Transdev from which batteries will be taken and repurposed for stationary applications

Netherlands / Germany - The Dutch bus and coach manufacturer, VDL Bus & Coach BV of Valkenswaard, launched “project Anubis” in Moerdijk, Netherlands, a second-life battery project, alongside Essen-based battery storage systems developer, RWE AG.

The initiative will use 7.5-megawatt of bus batteries taken from 43 electric VDL buses operated by Transdev in Eindhoven since 2016, and repurpose them for stationary applications, creating a more sustainable circular lifecycle for its batteries. The 43 sets of batteries are to be coupled to form one battery at the RWE power plant in Moerdijk. The project aims to develop knowledge and skills through research data, to help it expand the market for ‘second life’ bus batteries. VDL states that with European electric transport increasing year on year, there is already more than 150,000 tonnes of batteries available for recycling every year.
