Mahle Powertrain opens testing facilities in the UK and USA

New powertrain dynamometer in Michigan, USA

UK / USAMahle Powertrain Ltd, a subsidiary of Mahle based in Northampton, UK, announced in September a USD4m investment in a new powertrain test facility located at its engineering centre in Plymouth, Michigan, USA.

Mahle Powertrain says that the new powertrain dynamometer facility – which is located next to its existing chassis dynamometer – is capable of testing and calibrating individual drive components and complete drivelines for two- and four-wheeled vehicles. It claims that the test centre is unique in North America in being able to handle the very lightest and the very heaviest vehicles, including hybrid and electric, with a maximum wheelbase of 4.5m. It can accommodate up to 7,000Nm of instantaneous torque per wheel with an average torque response time of 0.5ms. The dynamometers are supported by a 623kW battery emulator with future expansion capacity to more than 1MW.
