Canada New Flyer Industries Canada ULC, a subsidiary of the NFI Group based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, has signed a contract for up to 166 zero-emission buses for Winnipeg Transit, which operates public transportation in NFI’s home city.

The contract stipulates a firm order for 16 electric buses, comprising an equal proportion of battery- and fuel-cell-electric drivelines. Four 40-foot Xcelsior CHARGE FC (i.e., fuel cell) and four 60-foot Xcelsior CHARGE FC buses were ordered alongside four 40-foot Xcelsior CHARGE NG and four 60-foot Xcelsior CHARGE NG buses. The contract includes options to order up to 150 more 40-foot buses over the next four years – either battery or fuel cell (or both). New Flyer has not disclosed a timeline for delivery of the vehicles, nor has it explained how the buses will be supplied with fuel or energy. The purchase is supported through the ‘Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program’.
