Westport and Johnson Matthey to develop aftertreatment system for hydrogen combustion

By Bradley Osborne - 17th January 2023

Canada / UKWestport Fuel Systems Inc of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada announced in December that it has selected Johnson Matthey plc, a speciality chemicals company based in London, UK, to develop an emissions aftertreatment system for its hydrogen combustion product.

In May 2022, Westport unveiled a “high pressure direct injection” (HPDI) system which can be fitted in a standard internal combustion engine to make it run on hydrogen. Although the main by-product of hydrogen combustion is water – as opposed to CO2 in a diesel engine – the process also produces harmful oxides such as NOx. Westport is therefore collaborating with John Matthey to design an aftertreatment system, tailored to its hydrogen HPDI product, that will reduce such emissions.
