Brazil - The City of São Paulo, through its transportation consortium, SP Trans, has announced it has already 1,682 electric buses on order, with 1,166 vehicles scheduled for delivery this year. SP Trans says more orders are expected as some companies have not submitted their new purchase requests. The City of São Paulo has already pledged that it will have 2,600 electric buses in operation by the end of 2024; this target is to try and match some of the other large cities in South America that are further ahead with its transition – such as Bogotá, Santiago, and Mexico City.
In Colombia, 1,006 new electric buses were registered in 2022, and in Chile, there were 779 units registered in the last three years. Currently, 13,800 buses operate in the city of São Paulo, 220 of which are electric buses, of which 201 are trolleybuses and 19 are battery-powered operated by TransWolff, on a route between Terminal Santo Amaro and UNISA university.
