Denso and Toyota to start green hydrogen project in Fukushima

PEM electrolyser system demonstration facility at DENSO Fukushima

Japan - Components giant, Denso Corporation* of Kariya, Aichi Prefecture, and Toyota Motor Corporation of Toyota, Japan, have partnered to start a green hydrogen demonstration project in March 2023, producing and using green hydrogen through the electrolysis of water at the Denso plant in Fukushima, as part of their wider carbon-neutral manufacturing plan. Renewable electricity sourced from solar panels has been in use at the plant for many years, allowing green hydrogen to be produced using Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyser system equipment developed by Toyota.

The project aims to expand the partnership to promote the use of green hydrogen in the Fukushima region, with Denso Fukushima serving as the hub and spreading the model of local production for local consumption of hydrogen from Fukushima Prefecture to the rest of Japan. The local production of hydrogen will also cut transport costs and the emissions generated from the logistics, a major issue plaguing the use of hydrogen.
