Scania and Northvolt present lithium NMC cell for heavy electric trucks

Prismatic battery cell jointly developed by Scania and Northvolt

SwedenScania AB, a subsidiary of the Traton Group based in Södertälje, and Northvolt AB, a battery cell manufacturer based in Stockholm, have unveiled a prismatic cell which they claim is designed to meet the needs of heavy-duty electric vehicles.

The lithium-ion cell which Scania and Northvolt have jointly developed has a capacity of 157 Ampere hours and a nominal voltage of 3.6 V. The chemistry is nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC). According to Scania CEO Christian Levin, the intention from the outset was to make a high-performance cell with low operating costs and a long lifespan. Following validation tests, Scania and Northvolt confirmed that the cells have the capacity to propel trucks up to 1.5 million kilometres over their lifetime.
