USD25m invested in Cummins Turbo Technologies site in Huddersfield

Inside a test cell at Huddersfield lab

UKCummins Turbo Technologies Ltd, the turbocharger subsidiary of American engine manufacturer Cummins Inc, has invested USD25m over a four-year period in its Huddersfield site, expanding its testing capabilities and refurbishing its production facility.

The test laboratory at Huddersfield comprises 17 active gas stands and one under construction. A gas stand tests the turbocharger beyond the limits of what is possible with engine testing. One of Huddersfield’s six test cells is a compressor performance cell with turbine capability, replicating compressed air flow through the turbocharger. A plenum chamber provides a static body of air to allow for highly repeatable test conditions. Turbochargers for applications from light commercial vehicles to 17-litre engines are accommodated. Hot turbine measurement is possible, and two inlet pipes also allow for dual inflow testing. USD1.6m is being invested in this test cell to expand its electrical and software capabilities.
