Brazil - Mercedes-Benz do Brasil of São Bernardo do Campo has announced that its e-O500U electric urban bus chassis has been approved for low cost finance from the BNDES (The National Bank for Social & Economic Development) via Finame – Baixo Carbono (low carbon); a special fund created by the government of Brazil to encourage operators to purchase low carbon machinery and equipment.
To qualify for the finance a percentage of the components making up the eO500U chassis, must be produced locally. Several key elements are produced in Brazil, these include the chassis structure, certain electrical items, including the batteries, which are supplied by BorgWarner and produced in its factory in Piracicaba (SP). Mercedes-Benz accreditation also considers other qualifying indexes, such as regular investment in the country, qualification and specialization training programmes, levels of exports, and local direct and indirect employment.
