SwedenScania AB, a subsidiary of the Traton Group based in Södertälje, Sweden, has announced its first order for steel produced using hydrogen from investor-backed start-up H2 Green Steel based in Stockholm.

H2 Green Steel is building a new steel mill in Boden in the north of Sweden which will employ green hydrogen instead of fossil fuels in the steel making process. Hydrogen will be burned instead of coal to reduce iron ore to direct-reduced-iron (DRI), creating water (rather than CO2) as a byproduct. An electrolyser onsite will supply the mill with hydrogen using electricity from sources such as hydropower and wind power (according to a BBC report1). Substituting green hydrogen for coal will reduce CO2 emissions from the iron reduction process by 95%, according to H2 Green Steel.
