USA / UK – Engine developer Achates Power Inc of San Diego, California, USA is working together with engineering consultancy Ricardo plc of Shoreham-by-Sea, UK on a U.S. government-funded project to design a lighter weight, more fuel-efficient opposed-piston engine for light commercial vehicles.

The project, named ‘Beryl’, aims to reduce the weight of Achates Power’s current-gen opposed-piston engine by 60%. By doing so, the project partners hope to improve the fuel economy by 20%, delivering 35 miles per gallon in a large-sized van or pickup truck. The final design will have a minimum power output of 270hp and will meet U.S. Tier 3 emissions standards.1
