Westport and Volvo to establish joint venture for commercialising HPDI

Volvo FH equipped with Westport HPDI to run on LNG

Canada / SwedenWestport Fuel Systems Inc of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and AB Volvo of Gothenburg, Sweden have signed a Letter of Intent to set up a joint venture which will “accelerate the commercialization and global adoption” of Westport’s high-pressure direct injection technology.

Westport’s HPDI products allow a conventional combustion engine to run on natural gas or hydrogen. HPDI, Westport argues, will make it possible for manufacturers to meet stringent emissions requirements while employing existing plant and established products such as ICE. Westport and Volvo envision that HPDI will be taken up for applications which are more difficult to decarbonise, such as long haul and offroad.
