Lightning eMotors’ next-gen ZEV4 Class 4 truck goes into series production

Lightning ZEV4 platform

USA – Lightning eMotors Inc, an electric vehicle retrofitter and manufacturer based in Loveland, Colorado, has started series production of its next-generation Lightning ZEV4 work ‘truck’ / platform range. The ZEV4 trucks and buses are built on the GMC Savana 4500 / Chevrolet Express 4500 platform base chassis. The truck is equipped with 120 kWh batteries located within the frame rails, delivering 241 horsepower, and offers up to 210 km (130 miles) of range on a single charge. The ZEV4 is capable of Level 2 AC charging and 80kW DC fast charging, whilst the truck is available in several variants (box truck, stake bed truck, dump truck, utility truck or cargo delivery vehicle).

To help accelerate EV fleet vehicle adoption in the U.S., the government has implemented a number of State and Federal funding schemes including: California’s Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP), New York’s Truck Voucher Incentive Program (NYTVIP), New Jersey’s Zero-Emission Incentive Program (NJZIP), and Colorado’s Clean Fleet Vehicle & Technology Grant Program, which can provide up to USD 100,000 in incentives per Class 4 vehicle. Federally, the United States has passed the Commercial Clean Vehicle Credit and the Inflation Reduction Act which can be used to subsidise EV CV acquisitions.
