Volvo self-driving trucks operate without safety drivers at commercial mine

Autonomous Volvo trucks at Brönnöy Kalk mine in Norway

Sweden / NorwayAB Volvo of Gothenburg, Sweden announced on 31 August that it successfully ran its autonomous trucks without safety drivers for the first time at an active mine in Norway.

Volvo began developing self-driving technology for trucks at Brönnöy Kalk mine in 2018. There are now seven autonomous FH trucks operating at the site, transporting limestone along a five-kilometre route, part of which is underground. The trucks are installed with software which was developed in-house by Volvo Autonomous Solutions. An operator manages the trucks remotely via a touch screen in the wheel loader.
