Scania delivers prototype truck powered by solar energy to customer

Solar-powered prototype truck by Scania

SwedenScania AB, a subsidiary of the Traton Group based in Södertälje, Sweden, has delivered a prototype hybrid truck to haulage firm Ernsts Express AB of Avesta which draws electric power from solar panels mounted on the semi-trailer.

The prototype truck is a 560-horsepower plug-in hybrid, combining a diesel engine and electric drive system developed in-house. Although the onboard batteries (100 kWh on the truck and 200 kWh on the trailer) can be charged by plug, the prototype truck primarily derives power from solar energy. It pulls an 18-metre trailer which is installed with solar panels. The panels cover an area of 100 square metres, providing maximum efficiency of 13.2 kWp.
