Volvo Group publishes results from SuperTruck II project

SuperTruck II by Volvo NA

USAVolvo Group North America Inc of Greensboro, North Carolina has released the results of its ‘SuperTruck II’ project, demonstrating a 134% improvement in freight efficiency over its 2009 baseline.

Volvo NA exceeded its original freight efficiency improvement target (measured in ton miles per gallon) of 120% with a 4x2 Class 8 tractor unit featuring reductions in drag and weight. The wedge-shaped cab, with its raked and wraparound windshield, provided a more aerodynamic shape; together with a fully aerodynamic trailer with gap fairings, skirts and boat tail, the truck achieved a 50% reduction in drag over the 2009 baseline and a 20% reduction compared with Volvo NA’s ‘SuperTruck I’. The replacement of conventional mirrors with cameras alone resulted in a 4% reduction in air resistance, according to Volvo NA.
