France / Sweden – Automotive corporation Renault SA (of Boulogne-Billancourt, France) and commercial vehicle manufacturer AB Volvo (of Gothenburg, Sweden) have announced their intention to establish a joint venture based in France for the development and production of a new electric van platform.

Subject to regulatory approval, the joint venture will be launched in 2024, with both partners pledging to invest EUR300m each over the next three years. The aim of the joint venture is to develop a fully electric “skateboard” platform which will be the basis for a range of new van models. The vans based on this platform will reportedly be “software defined vehicles”, i.e., integrated with cutting-edge digital hardware and capable of receiving over-the-air updates.
