UK – The UK market for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs, i.e., trucks >6t) grew by 13.5% to 46,227 registrations in 2023, making it the best year for the UK truck market since the COVID-19 pandemic, according to statistics published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

46,227 new trucks were put on British roads in 2023, compared to 40,716 in 2022, showing that the market is continuing to recover from the impact of the pandemic on supply and demand. However, the 2023 total is still below the 48,535 units registered in 2019. Out of the 46,227 registered in 2023, 234 were electric (battery and fuel cell) trucks, a threefold growth over 2022 (64 units). SMMT’s Chief Executive, Mike Hawes, said however that operators still need “cast-iron confidence” that there will be enough infrastructure to support their electric trucks before they will make the switch in larger numbers.
