Japan - Isuzu Motors Ltd, headquartered in Japan’s Yokohama prefecture, has agreed to establish a partnership with local autonomous driving technology company, Tier IV Inc based at the Nagoya University Open Innovation Center, in Nagoya-City, Aichi Prefecture, for the development of autonomous driving systems for public transport buses.

As part of their agreement, Isuzu plans to invest JPY60bn (USD40m) in Tier IV (although no equity stake is mentioned), which it describes as a pioneering force behind Autoware – which it claims to be ‘the world’s first open-source software for autonomous driving.’ Isuzu confirmed the alliance is aimed at speeding up the development and deployment of  Level 4 autonomous driving systems specifically designed for route buses.
