Cummins Turbo launches e-compressor for fuel cell applications at Wuxi plant

Test cell in Cummins Turbo Wuxi plant

UK / ChinaCummins Turbo Technologies Ltd of Huddersfield, UK has announced that it launched its first e-compressor for fuel cell engines on 1 February from its plant in Wuxi, Jiangsu, China.

The manufacturer’s e-compressor develops 45 kW with a high-speed motor at 110,000 rpm. It is designed for commercial vehicle fuel cell engines (150-200 kW) but can also be applied to larger engines (240-260 kW) under turbine energy recovery. Cummins Turbo says the packaging is compact, aerodynamic, and robust, with a low-inertia rotor and high pressure ratio design inside providing efficient performance. The impeller or driven rotor inside the compressor is a “full-blade” design, making it relatively quiet and smooth when in operation.
