USA – A self-driving shuttle service will be put on the roads of Detroit, Michigan this summer, with USD1.5m in funding from local government and private interests and autonomous driving technology from Perrone Robotics Inc of Charlottesville, Virginia.
Four minibuses – Ford ‘E-Transit’ vans retrofitted with Perrone’s ‘TONY’ self-driving hardware – will transport passengers on a 10.8-mile route through the city of Detroit, connecting Michigan Central Station (set to reopen this June) and the Pensole Lewis College of Business and Design. The vehicles will be put through several months of on- and off-road testing before their planned deployment this summer. Passengers will be able to ride free of charge, and the minibuses will be compliant with the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (including wheelchair accessibility).
