EU strengthens heavy-duty CO2 emissions legislation

EU flag

Belgium – This week, the EU Commission voted to strengthen (amend) the CO2 legislation around heavy-duty vehicles, which will further reduce CO2 emissions from road transport and introduce new targets for 2030, 2035 and 2040. The law will mandate a 90% cut in CO2 emissions from new heavy-duty vehicles by 2040. Truck OEMs will have to reduce the CO2 emissions of their fleets by 45% by 2030 (replacing an existing 30% target by 2030 and 65% by 2035). In terms of buses, from 2030, 90% of new urban buses sold in the EU will be required to have zero emissions, rising to 100% in 2035.
