GermanyMercedes-Benz Group AG of Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg has announced a partnership with Berlin-based startup Onomotion GmbH to develop a last-mile delivery concept based on connectivity between Mercedes-Benz ‘eSprinter’ vans and Onomotion’s electric cargo bikes.

The basic idea is to turn large-sized cargo vans into “mobile micro-depots” from which cargo bikes can collect and deliver goods during the last mile. The van transports goods between the logistics centre and the city; these are then picked up and delivered by multiple cargo bikes, which locate the van through telematics. Alternatively, the van can drive between prearranged pickups from multiple cargo bikes before carrying out last-mile deliveries on its own, reducing the time spent idling.
