USA / Canada — At the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo 2024 in Las Vegas, Ballard Power Systems Inc, a manufacturer of fuel cell systems based in Burnaby, British Columbia, launched its 9th generation 120kW fuel cell engine (FCmove-XD) for the HGV market. The product will go into series production at the end of 2024 at the Ballard factory in Oregon with plans to move production to its future twenty-two-acre fuel cell production Gigafactory (“Ballard Rockwall Giga 1”) in Rockwall, Texas. According to Ballard, the engine delivers significant improvements in efficiency, power density, serviceability and therefore the total cost of ownership (TCO). The engine has been designed to operate for over a million miles or, over 30,000 hours. Furthermore, this new generation has 33% fewer parts, reducing servicing time and cost.
In terms of power density, the FCmove-XD achieves the highest volumetric power density (0.36 kW/L and gravimetric power density of 0.48 kW/kg) for heavy-duty applications on the market, according to Ballard engineers. The 120kW fuel cell engine integrates DC/DC regulated output, allowing up to three modules to operate as one system which is capable of delivering a combined power output of 360 kW.
